Omniverse: "A hypothetical set or number of supposedly co-existing universes"
The Town Hall is located on W 43rd Street in Midtown Manhattan. It is very similar to the Berkeley Performance Center, a personal favorite venue. Town Hall opened in 1921, and was originally constructed as a venue for political speeches, but is now solely a performance space.
I have been to The Town Hall previously to see the Richard Thompson Band . RT is a founding member of Fairport Convention, and has had a long career as a solo act, performing under his own name. Richard Thompson has been a longtime personal favorite, and is simply one of the best songwriters and guitarists performing today.
On a recent NYC trip, jazz saxophonist Donald Harrison’s Music Omniverse was the evening’s performance: (http://thetownhall.org/event/donald-harrisons-music-omniverse).
We became familiar with Donald Harrison at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Besides the Fest, we have also seen him perform at Tipitina’s, leading a group of young New Orleans musicians and interns. A native New Orleanian, Donald comes from that rich tradition of music and Mardi Gras Indian culture. Along side his musical resume, Donald succeeded his father as the Big Chief of the Guardians of the Flame Mardi Gras Indians.
Among his numerous accomplishments, Donald is an NEA Jazz Master and has an honorary Doctorate from Berklee. He has performed with an extensive list of musicians, and was also part of the HBO series, Treme.
For the Music Omniverse, Donald offered up an ensemble of special guest musicians, and encompassed jazz, funk, R & B, and rap. It was a fantastic display of talent, driven by Donald’s leadership, a display of his journey as a musician and educator.
