How Old Is Too Old - Part 4

A Few September 18, 2024 Reflections

75 circles around the sun. 75 rings in the cross-section.

Just returned from my annual physical. A few more pounds, but A-OK, all systems go. I’m not sure how being 75 should feel. It doesn’t feel much different than 74. A bit less energy. a few more afternoon naps. Maybe more than I choose to admit. The cognitive aspect does not appear to be diminished. I participate in (2) Boston University studies that track cognitive decline. On my part, there has been no indications of decline, although during my last interview, the technician made note that a section of the testing reflected a moderate sense of despair or despondency. That didn’t make sense to me. I have always thought my glass was more than half-filled. My reply was, “When you look at the state of national politics and the associated dysfunction, how could you not feel a bit despondent?” He could only laugh and shake his head in agreement. Plus, I think the backgammon helps stimulate the synapses. Check out www.mwbgs.com

It’s been 2 months since Joe Biden withdrew. Clearly it was the right decision. It was the right decision for Democrats, for the country, and for Joe Biden and his family. But It was painful to watch. And it’s something many of us have experienced with family members, or will experience directly, as part of the aging process.

How many series can you binge at the same time? We have revisited “The Sopranos” (1st episode-01/99) and “The Wire” (1st episode-06/02), and are currently rewatching “Breaking Bad” (1st episode-01/08). All are so much better the 2nd time around. Besides BB, juggling “Slow Horses”, “Bad Monkey”, and “The Old Man”, which stars Jeff Bridges, a favorite old man actor, although Gary Oldman is very impressive in Slow Horses. Of course, real Jeff Bridges fans also know his work as The Dude.

Anyway, the universe has conspired to celebrate National Cheeseburger Day on September 18, and provides an opportunity to reflect back on the Ashland Tour de Burger. Dale, my comrade in bovine bliss, has moved on. Not, like literally. He moved out of Ashland.

As I mentioned above, my glass has always been more than half-filled. And as another ring is added, it is my good fortune to have a network of family and friends, who seem to tolerate someone who can be opinionated,  judgmental, and argumentative. Call it a support system for an aging crank.
